Thank you, President Obama, for including people with mental illness in your State of the Union address

Last night, in this State of the Union message, President Obama said this:

“I want future generations to know that we are a people who see our differences as a great gift,” he said, “that we are a people who value the dignity and worth of every citizen – man and woman, young and old, black and white, Latino, Asian, immigrant, Native American, gay, straight, Americans with mental illness or physical disability.”

It’s the first time that I’m aware of that people with mental illness were mentioned this way, right alongside people with physical challenges.

Thank you, Mr. President, for a small step that’s also a big step.
